Healthy Glow Hemp Protein Smoothie
Hemp could win an academy award for being an excellent source of plant based protein. This quality alone has made hemp protein a desirable addition to vegan and raw food diets but you certainly don’t have to follow a specific diet to enjoy the benefits of this plant powerhouse!
In addition to protein and fiber (which are needed for good digestion and blood sugar balance) hemp provides both omega 6 and omega 3 essential fatty acids which are needed for a healthy heart and nervous system, glowing skin, happy hormones, weight loss and much more. Your body cannot produce these fats on it’s own so it’s important to obtain them from your diet. All of these qualities of hemp protein will help you feel a healthy glow from the inside out.
One of my favorite ways to add hemp protein to my diet is in a smoothie. You can use hemp protein powder but hulled hemp hearts work just as well. Because of the slightly nutty and earthy taste, I like to add a pinch of raw cacao powder to give it a chocolate-y flavor and a boost of antioxidants. Raw cacao powder can be found at your local health food store. I am delighted to share with you my oh-so satisfying Healthy Glow Hemp Smoothie recipe!
- 1 tbsp hemp protein powder or 3 tbsp hulled hemp hearts
- large handful of organic greens, such as spinach or spring mix
- 1 medium sized banana
- 1 cup coconut milk
- sprinkling of raw cacao powder (optional)
- filtered water to reach desired consistency
- raw cacao nibs as a garnish (optional)
Place greens and coconut milk in a blender or food processor and blend until smooth. Add remaining ingredients, using a few splashes of filtered water to reach desired consistency. Top with raw cacao nibs if you’re feeling fancy. Enjoy!
