Is Gluten Free a Hot New Trend or Here to Stay?

I’ve worked with thousands of people over my decade or so in the health industry and I don’t think I’ve ever stopped being amazed at the dramatic effect going gluten free can have on someone’s waistline and overall health. Even if you aren’t gluten sensitive, allergic, intolerant, a celiac or even believe in all the gluten hype almost everyone can benefit from going gluten free or low gluten. Why? Well my reasoning might be different than what you are used to hearing… Recently I was involved in a conversation with a couple of trainers who were talking about gluten. Their take on...

Gluten-Free: Just Another Fad Diet or the Solution to Your Health Problems?

The gluten-free industry is booming, estimated to reach $6.2 billion by 2018, according to research done by MarketsandMarkets. Gluten-free products can be expensive, and although widely more available now than even 5 years ago, it can still be a challenge to find them unless you’re in a health food store. So what is all the hype about anyway? Is gluten-free just the latest fad diet? Could going gluten-free be the solution to your health problems? Let’s start with the basics. Gluten is a protein found in foods processed from wheat, barley, and rye. It also commonly contaminates other grains that do not...

3 Healthy Things to Know About Breasts

I started to study and educate women on breast health almost five years ago and the more I learn, the simpler what I teach becomes. Most women do not conduct a self-breast exam, they have no idea what a self-breast massage is and most women are not comfortable with touching their breasts. With so much attention and focus on breast cancer, how is this possible? We are inundated with pink ribbons and pink products to honour “The Cure.” There are a plethora of walks, runs and fundraising events happening. With all this attention, should it not be that breast cancer rates...

The Dirty Dozen Workout

This month I wanted to share a workout that you can do almost anywhere. Recipes for Health: Roast Salmon

One of our favorite methods of cooking on the fly is roasting, a method of dry heat cooking that uses an uncovered pan in the oven. It produces a well-browned exterior and, ideally, a moist interior. Roasting fish and vegetables is a quick and easy way to prepare dinner on a busy night. In less than 45 minutes you can have a fresh and delicious meal with minimal clean-up. The trick to making less mess is lining the baking sheets with foil and making simple preparations. Salmon is a rich source of protein and contains a high concentration of healthful omega-3...

Health Effects of Drinking Soda

At any given lunch period at Old Union Elementary School in Southlake, Texas, 28 cans of carbonated soda (many wrapped in foil to keep cool) are being consumed amongst 106 third graders. In other words, 26% of the class is drinking soda at lunch. By the end of the day, 60% of all the third graders will have consumed at least one soda. Soft drinks have replaced milk as the drink of choice for these children. As parents we willingly comply, but the health effects to our children, and the financial burden to our health care system will be enormous. How...
